Here in Middlesbrough, we have an absolute wealth of independent businesses and it's almost like there's a new one opening every other day. From boutiques to micropubs, and eateries to salons, we have it all, and many of them are owned by women.
While we would love to showcase every single one, we've selected 5 businesses in the town that are owned by women to share with you all.
The Twisted Lip
If you venture down Baker Street, you'll find a Victorian-esque pub, clad in unusual decor and serving up posh grub like camembert bonbons. This is The Twisted Lip, owned by Erica Saul, and while business was slow to start because "it took a while for people to get their heads around what was going on," the pub is now a hive of activity with open mic nights and a wide selection of not-your-typical-Carling drinks on tap. Definitely go along and try one of the flavoured ciders!
The Tea House
Formerly known as The Olde Young Tea House, this tea hot spot is owned by Carli-Jayne MacNaught and has thrived ever since its opening in 2011. And with a huge range of teas to choose from and fresh homemade cakes, it's not hard to see why! If kitsch decor, music of past eras and friendly service is your thing, The Tea House is the place for you. Carli has also brought back their popular Afternoon Tea Club, which you can read about here.
Saint Boutique
This is another brilliant business that you can find on Baker Street and is owned by the very fabulous Jessie Saint. Starting this business fresh from her time at Cleveland College of Art and Design, Jessie has built a well-known Middlesbrough brand that continues to flourish every year. Her shop stocks a range of bohemian items, like clothing, accessories, homeware and more! For aspiring young
entrepreneurs, she's a great inspiration.
Mohujos Burrito Bar
If you're in the mood for Mexican food, head to Bedford Street. There, you'll find Mohujos, owned by Wendy Sayers, which serves the most delicious burritos made the way that you want. Think that-famous-sandwich-shop, but with more pinto beans, shredded beef and flavour. This is a smaller branch of the bigger Mohujos restaurant in Stockton, which just shows that business is booming for the burrito bar. We highly recommend you go along and try the naked burrito. It's delicious!
Destiny Bridal and Prom
Ellen McNulty opened Destiny after surviving ovarian cancer and realising that you only live one life. She had a dream of opening a shop of her own in her hometown, and almost 6 years on, Destiny has helped to provide thousands of brides, bridesmaids and prom queens with the dress of their dreams. Nothing is ever too much for Ellen and the rest of her team, so Destiny is the place to go if you're planning a big day.
